HomeImmaculate Conception Cathedral of Pasig, officially the Cathedral and Parish of the Immaculate Conception and popularly known as Pasig Cathedral, is the mother church and episcopal seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pasig. It stands on Plaza Rizal in the historic heart of Pasig City, Metro Manila, and ranks among the oldest churches in the region.
History and heritage
The parish traces its beginnings to Augustinian missionaries, who established it in the early 1570s as the town of Pasig itself was being founded. First placed under Our Lady of the Visitation, the parish was rededicated to the Immaculate Conception in 1587. The present Baroque stone church rose in the eighteenth century and is among the oldest church edifices in Pasig; a National Historical marker was installed in 1937, and a major restoration was completed in 2022. Care of the parish passed from the Augustinians to the CICM Fathers (1910–1979) and then to Filipino diocesan clergy. On 21 August 2003 the church was elevated to cathedral status as the seat of the newly created Diocese of Pasig.
Patroness and devotion
The cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, whose feast falls on 8 December. Its venerated image, La Inmaculada Concepción de Pasig, received a canonical coronation in December 2008 and remains a focus of local devotion. Visitors come for quiet prayer beneath its historic interior, for the plaza and old-town setting around it, and for the crowds and processions that mark the December feast.
