The parish originated from the Woolmer Mission, established around 1870, and grew from services held at Woolmer Lodge, the home of the Macdonald family. In 1911, the church was consecrated, and the parish of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was canonically established on February 11, 1920, with Richard Atherton as the first parish priest.
